I've been working on this book formally since 2005, and informally throughout my adult life. I have spoken and written to hundreds, perhaps thousands, of people about the topics covered in this book, and I have read just as many books, scientific papers, journal articles, chat room discussions, and blog posts. I mentioned some of them in the book, and others formed almost every sentence I wrote. The Quiet book was based on the experience of many people, especially scientists and researchers whose work taught me a lot. In an ideal world, I would name every source, mentor, and interviewee, but for the sake of readability, some names appear only in marginal notes or in acknowledgments.
